At the beginning of 2013, my job took me to Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil to support a project for about five months. While there I got to explore the beautiful landscape, experience the vibrant culture, and enjoy the warm hospitality. I made frequent weekend excursions from Sao Jose and got to see many scenic locations in and around the Sao Paulo region. These are some of my most memorable excursions and moments during my time in Brazil.

DRIVE ALONG THE COAST

January 12, 2013

During my first weekend in Brazil, I took a drive along the coastline from Caraguatatuba to Ubatuba with my friend and coworker, Mark. Even though it was a cloudy day, the coastline looked beautiful with dense green forest, white sand beaches, and the mountainous Ilhabela Island looming just offshore.

ILHABELA ISLAND

January 19, 2013

Having seen Ilhabela from the coastline the week before, I returned to explore the island itself. Unfortunately, it was another cloudy day and most of the island was obscured by the clouds. I took my time wandering through Santa Tereza, had a relaxing afternoon lunch on the beach, and returned to the ferry dock in the early evening. Finally the clouds began to part, and on the ferry ride back to the mainland, I got a nice view of the island in the soft light of the sunset.

CARNIVAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO

February 10, 2013

The Brazil experience wouldn’t be complete without seeing the famous Carnival celebration. To make the most of it, Mark and I went to Rio de Janeiro to watch the all night long Samba Parade in the Sambrodromo. For five hours, samba schools danced their way through the Sambrodromo, each with elaborate costumes and floats set to a different theme. The sheer magnitude and energy of the event was unforgettable.

ILHABELA ISLAND

February 16, 2013

On a beautiful summer Saturday, I returned to Ilhabela Island to go swimming and relax on the beach. Curral beach, towards the southern end of the island was a great place to spend the afternoon.

LIGHTENING OVER SAO JOSE

February 22, 2013

Nearly every hot summer day, a late afternoon thunderstorm rolls over Sao Jose. For a couple of hours, giant lightning bolts light up the sky over the city, creating a brilliant show that is always captivating to watch.

ITATIAIA NATIONAL PARK

February 24, 2013

Itatiaia National Park, Brazil’s oldest national park, is located just a couple hours north of Sao Jose dos Campos. The park consists of a high mountainous region to the north, and a lower, densely forested region to the south. For this day excursion, I entered through the southern entrance of the park and explored the many beautiful waterfalls, flowers, and wildlife found in the dense jungle.

ITATIAIA NATIONAL PARK

March 3, 2013

Wanting to see more of Itatiaia National Park, I returned on another day excursion to see the northern region of the park. A stark contrast from the dense jungle on the south side, this high mountain region consists of jagged rocky outcrops, alpine meadows, and granite cliffs. From these high mountain tops, the green Brazilian landscape could be seen extending for miles in all directions.

TRINDADE

March 9, 2013

The small town of Trindade is located on a beautiful section of coastline just inside the southern edge of Rio de Janeiro state and is known for its laid back, hippie type demeanor. The largest section of beach, Praia do Cochadaco, is accessed by a short trail through the jungle, which gains significant elevation and provides a nice view of the coastline to the north. On the southern end of Praia do Cochadaco, another overland trail leads to a group of rock outcroppings which create natural swimming pools, sheltered by the waves. Though staying in Paraty, a short distance away, I enjoyed spending most of the day on these beaches at Trindade.

PARATY

March 9, 2013

Paraty is a quaint Portuguese colonial town located on the Bay of Ilha Grande. With its colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and beautiful views, Paraty has become a popular tourist town. Spending the weekend there with some of my friends, we explored the town, relaxed on the beach, and enjoyed the night life in the city square.

WATERFALLS NEAR ITANHANDU

March 16, 2013

The best way to see the hidden treasures of any region is to be shown by the locals. On this Saturday, several friends from Itanhandu took us into the scenic mountains of Minas Gerais to go swimming at their favorite swimming holes. Hidden under the deep foliage of a secluded mountain ravine, a series of waterfalls cascade into a deep pool in this small mountain stream.

CAMPOS DO JORDAO

April 20, 2013

The highest city in Brazil, Campos do Jordao is known for its European architecture and relatively cold temperatures. The European-style buildings and surrounding high altitude Atlantic forest with Brazilian Parana Pine set this area apart from the subtropical regions along the coast. It was a great place for a day trip and made me feel like I had somehow wandered into Europe, instead of the mountains of Brazil.

BELO HORIZONTE

April 26, 2013

Belo Horizonte is the capital city of the state of Minas Gerais and is located about an 8 hour drive north of Sao Paulo city. A couple of our Brazilian friends from this city were happy to take Mark and I there for the weekend. Built in a mountainous region, the buildings sprawl over the rolling hills, giving the city a very dynamic feel.

SAO PAULO

May 1, 2013

After having been in Brazil for three and a half months, I finally took some time to explore the city of Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and the metro area is home to over 20 million people. From the air, the city is an overwhelming mass of buildings that extends as far as the eye can see, but from the streets, the city presents an intriguing environment rich in history and culture. In just a few hours walking around the downtown area, I got to see some of the cities well know features, such as the Se Cathedral, Dom Pedro II Park, and the incredibly tall Banespa Building.

IGUAZU FALLS

May 4, 2013

Located on the border between Brazil and Argentina, Iguazu Falls is a large grouping of waterfalls that combine to make one of the most spectacular natural displays in the world. The most impressive section of the falls is an elongated U-shaped gorge called the Devil’s Throat, where water pours in from three sides and falls over 270 feet, generating a column of mist that rises up to 400 feet in the air. On Saturday Mark and I went to the Brazilian side of the falls, hoping to see some nice views. However, it turned out to be a cold, rainy day and between the pouring rain and the mist from the falls, we got completely soaked and left early to go dry out. Sunday I got up and went to the Argentina side of the falls, disappointed that the morning was still cloudy and rainy. However, halfway through the day, the clouds began to part and it turned into a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Just before closing time, I went to the Devil’s Throat overlook and captured a beautiful panorama of the largest section of the falls pouring into the Devil’s Throat gorge in the late afternoon sunlight.

ILHA GRANDE

May 11, 2013

Ilha Grande is a beautiful island, located southwest of Rio de Janeiro. The main town of Vila do Abraao has a peaceful, laidback atmosphere, aided by the fact that no cars are allowed on the island. Everything is either a short walk, or a relaxing boat ride away. Lopes Mendes beach, on the south side of the island, is among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Here I enjoyed my Saturday sitting under the palm trees, watching the crystal clear waves gently roll up on the white sand beach.

SUNSET OVER ILHA GRANDE

May 12, 2013

Reluctantly leaving the island on the last Sunday evening ferry back to Angra dos Reis, I got to observe the incredible sunset over the northwest side of Ilha Grande and the mountainous Brazilian mainland. The soft light reflecting off the water and small islands throughout the bay painted a beautiful scene and was a perfect ending to an excellent weekend.

RIO DE JANEIRO

May 30, 2013

Coming towards the end of our project in Brazil, Mark and I returned to Rio de Janeiro to see some of the highlights of the city that we didn’t get the opportunity to see during the craziness of Carnival on our last trip. We took the tram up to the Corcovado to see the Christ statue and the amazing view, went on a favela tour for a new perspective of life’s struggles in the big city, and explored the famous Leblon area and Ipanema Beach. As Brazil’s most famous city, Rio certainly lives up to its reputation for beautiful scenery, cultural diversity, and vibrant nightlife.
